Adoption Success!
Check out our sweet Emmy Lou, who was rescued from a run-down pen filled with mud and water less than two months ago. She is now living a pampered life on a farm in Sparta, Wisconsin with Joyce and Ron, who are both prior WDR adopters. They adopted a very sweet pup named Cassie from us back in 2016, a senior dog with Cushing’s disease who had come from a home who kept her in a rusty crate in a garage. Adopters kept overlooking Cassie, and she was in foster care for many months, but she hit the jackpot when Ron and Joyce made her a part of their family. Cassie had an incredible life with them, taking daily walks on the farm and getting so much individual time and attention. She trimmed down, her coat filled in, and she lived four more full, happy, and healthy years. In 2019, Joyce’s health took a turn when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and Cassie stayed right by her side through the trials of treatment. Earlier this year, Joyce was thankfully deemed cancer-free and done with her treatments, and Cassie passed away soon after. We think she probably knew her job was done, and it was her time to go.
Joyce is also the mom of WDR’s Applications Manager and Board Member, Jessica. Jess knew that her mom really missed having dog companionship, so we have been on the lookout for an exceptional pup to bring that unique companionship and joy back to their home. We wanted an adult (middle-aged) pup with a moderate energy level that enjoyed walks and was good with cats, dogs, and grandkids. When Emmy Lou was rescued from that mud-filled pen, we quickly knew she was special and deserved so much more in life. She came up to N. VA and had a wonderful foster mom named Tonia, who helped settle her in and retrained her on the rules of home life. We learned that Emmy Lou was a sweet and submissive pup who was kind to everyone, and she felt like the perfect fit for Joyce and Ron.
A few weeks later, Jessica and her husband Sam loaded up their two Pugs, Maude and Lewie, and Emmy Lou for a road trip to Sparta, and we are pleased to share that Emmy Lou is now officially home. She will no longer have to fear life in a filthy pen without regular food, clean water, or shelter from the storms. She’s already had such a positive impact, and Joyce is back out doing twice-daily walks with Emmy Lou by her side. She has now met all the grandkids and family dogs and fits in fabulously well. Joyce shared this update:
“We love Emmy Lou. She is the sweetest girl ever. Thank you so much for her. Our grandkids love her also. They all give her hugs. Our 2 cats are starting to come out of the bedroom to reclaim their territory. Emmy may chase if they run, but she immediately stops when we tell her no. Otherwise they are settling in. We have learned she likes to counter surf, and does like to rearrange our shoes. She doesn’t chew them, just moves them to a new spot. It’s pretty funny. She has gotten me off the couch and we go for at least two walks a day. She walks really well, and seems to really enjoy it. I will keep you posted from time to time on how she is doing. Thank you once again for letting us have her. She is the best to cuddle with.”
We are so happy for Emmy Lou, Joyce, and Ron, and wish them many happy, healthy years to come.
