Sweet Caroline

Sweet Caroline was rescued from a life of poverty, tied out on a porch, and was clearly in need of significant medical care. She had no vetting, was unspayed and had been bred repeatedly, and had raging skin infections both from allergies and flea dermatitis. Her secondary infections from scratching her skin were so severe she had lost half of her coat. While she was initially timid and scared when she came into the rescue, after some good vet care, TLC, and time to decompress in her foster home, a charming, loving, confident Caroline emerged.

Caroline made her way to N. Va in February and quickly captured the interest of one of our volunteers. The couple had recently lost a pup that they had rehabilitated and were the kind of passionately committed adopters we were looking for – someone who would be committed to Caroline’s health and wellness and would be proactive with her care. They wanted a pup who could participate in all aspects of their life, like trips to the local cafe, hikes on the weekends, and hanging out on the couch like a big snuggle bug. Caroline was the perfect match for them. Her new family shared this update:

Caroline has brought so much joy into our home since day one and has become the silver lining during the mandatory stay home order. Her eyes initially captured our attention, but the personality behind them has captured our hearts. Sweet Caroline, or as we affectionately call her Miss Sass, Love Bug, Tank, and Wiggle Butt, has given us so many laughs, cuddles, and kisses….I read somewhere that Caroline means ‘Little and Strong.’ Caroline is that & more…She appreciates the little things in life, like the warmth of the sun or a soft fleece blanket. Her personality comes out more and more each day, from slamming into the front door with excitement letting us know she is ready to go outside, to showing us her inner-Houdini by opening the pantry door to find her treats (which included one vet visit and one new door knob later). Caroline went from being our constant shadow to finding her independence, whether it be sitting out on the deck or finally working up the courage to say she would prefer to sleep on our chaise lounge than on her dog bed. She has developed a love, some would say obsession, for frozen peanut butter & pumpkin filled kongs.

Caroline has both spunk and sass. She is sugar and spice and everything nice. She whines with excitement and wiggles her butt when approaching everyone she greets. Caroline’s love for food has provided us endless entertainment. Flying down the stairs after waking up mid-snore upon hearing her breakfast kibble hit her food bowl has become our morning routine. While Caroline begrudgingly tolerates her weekly medicated baths, she finds a new sense of energy once she is all dried off using our 4 floors to showcase her “so-fresh and so clean” zoomies. Watching her fearlessness and resilience is a reminder to us all, especially during these times, to be grateful for the little things in life. If you know Caroline, you begin to understand how she survived her start to life- it was the combination of the two that led her to all the wonderful people who came before us and gave her the love and affection she deserved until we could find our way to her. To everyone who let Miss Caroline into your hearts, we thank each one of you. Sending you all many hugs, kisses, & tail wags. ~ Caroline’s mom and dad, Al and B

Thank you to everyone who helped Sweet Caroline find her way home.
