Worthy Dog’s Community Vet Care Fund

Worthy Dog’s Community Vet Care Fund gives all year round, and enables us to help keep dogs like King in loving homes.

King’s family brought him into one of our veterinary partners when he was in critical condition. He had gone missing from their securely fenced backyard, and the family was worried about him because he never leaves home. They finally found him hiding under the house, suffering and in a lot of pain, where he’d burrowed into the dirt and was preparing to die. His leg was severely swollen and his body was rife with infection. They didn’t have the means to pay for an emergency surgery but were desperate to save their dog. King’s dad was hugging him and visibly upset, and was even willing to give him up to save him. Many families love their dogs but are unable to deal with the high costs of emergency vet care.

One of our volunteers works at this vet office and contacted us for help, and we agreed to help cover King’s vet costs. They were able to get him into surgery right away, drain the infection, and save his leg. King had either been bitten by a snake or a very poisonous spider, and if he had waited much longer, he wouldn’t have survived the spread of infection.

Part of King’s recovery required that his family bring him inside to care for his wounds and keep his leg dry and clean. They took great care of him as he recuperated, and in the process, the family further bonded with him. King is now a fulltime indoor dog and a prized member of the family. His dad not only agreed to get King neutered, but the family brought in another dog from their community to be spayed who had birthed nine litters of puppies. The effect that this has had on King, his family, and their community is a great example of why we believe in investing in education, outreach, and sponsoring emergency vet care.

Worthy Dog created a Community Vet Care Fund to help the dogs of loving, responsible owners receive the emergency care they need. In 2018, we provided over $5,000 in critical care for dogs from low-income families. We hope to do more in 2019. Without changing hearts and minds, rescue alone can only treat the symptoms of animal overpopulation and neglect. We couldn’t be happier for King and his family, and because of the generosity of our donors, this has already had a ripple effect in their community. Two dogs are now living better lives, and countless puppies will not go unwanted, starving, or abused.
